Diecast models, those marvelous miniature marvels beloved by collectors worldwide, occupy a place of honor among the pantheon of hobbies. The very process of crafting these scaled-down versions of cars, trains, buses, and planes captures the intricate details, nuanced textures, and subtle shades of the original. The result is a resplendent recreation, a veritable feast for the eyes that can elevate any domicile from mundane to magnificent. Indeed, to possess a diecast model is to hold a cherished treasure, a tangible reminder of the beauty and grace of transportation that weaves its way through our lives.
What are diecast models?
A diecast model replicates a real vehicle made with a die casting or metal casting method. Diecast models are usually zinc or lead alloy and come fully formed as a single piece. They are more accurate than plastic models and have a longer shelf life.
This is a great way to keep your model cars, planes, and other vehicles in good condition so you can share them with future generations. Whether you’re looking for a diecast car, plane, tank, train, coach, truck, tram, or motorcycle model kit online or in-store, there’s something for everyone!
How are they made?

Diecast models and toys are made by die casting or metal casting. Molten metal is poured into a mold with the desired toy’s shape and form. This happens under high pressure, meaning the molten metal will quickly fill up the entire mold. This process is an effective and efficient way to mass-produce toys while maintaining high consistency and quality.
How to start a diecast collection
Now that you know more about diecast models, you might want to start your own collection. But there are a few things you should think about before starting.
- Diecast models come in different sizes. You can choose a model that is small, medium, or large.
- What era of model do you want? Early 20th century or something more modern? Thinking about this will help you focus your collection. It can also be fun to display your models in historical scenes.
- There are a few brands that make diecast models. Some are better than others. You should check out our Dinky Toys collection if you want high-quality replicas!

What are the steps in making a diecast model car?
- Choose the model car you want to make.
- Find a car picture online and print it out as a guide.
- Trace the car’s outline onto a piece of cardboard using a marker.
- Cut out the cardboard template with scissors.
- Use the template to cut out two identical pieces of metal from your sheet metal using tin snips or a jigsaw (this will be the body and chassis of your model car).
- Drill holes at each end of the chassis using a drill slightly smaller than your rivets (make sure not to drill all the way through). The number and size of rivets you’ll need depends on how big your model is – for our small 1:64 scale model, we used six 3/16″ rivets on each side).
- Assemble the chassis by folding it in half and inserting the rivets through the holes (you may need pliers to help with this). Ensure that both sides are evenly aligned before hammering in the rivets (a vice can come in handy for this step).
- Attach one side of the body to one end of the chassis using small screws or rivets.
- Attach the other side of the body to the other end of the chassis using small screws or rivets.
- That’s it! Your diecast model car is now complete.
Diecast model collections are popular among many people. Some people have a favorite diecast model car. People usually collect these models and put them on display in their homes. Do you have a diecast model car collection?
FAQ
What is the metal used to make diecast models?
Diecast models are usually made of zinc alloys, a combination of metals including zinc, copper, and magnesium.
How is the metal melted down to form diecast models?
Diecast models are made by melting down the metal and pouring it into a mold. The molten metal is poured into a mold that has the shape of the finished product. Once the metal cools, the diecast model is removed from the mold.
Is diecast metal or plastic?
Diecast is a type of metal casting in which the molten metal is poured into a mold that contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape. The mold is then cooled and opened to reveal the finished part.
How are toy cars built?
Toy cars are built through a process of die-casting. Molten metal is injected into a mold cavity, where it cools and solidifies to form the toy car.
Are diecast cars worth money?
Diecast cars are not generally worth money. Depending on their condition and the manufacturer, they may be worth more or less, but they will not usually sell for a high price.
